Megaways is a licensed mechanic invented by Big Time Gaming. Instead of fixed rows, each reel shows a random number of symbols every spin — usually between two and seven. Multiply those together and you get the ways to win for that spin, anywhere from 324 to 117,649.

How a spin resolves
- Reels set their height. Each of the six reels independently picks two to seven symbols.
- Ways are counted. Six reels at seven symbols each gives 7⁶ = 117,649 ways.
- Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels, with no paylines involved.
- Winning symbols vanish and new ones drop in — the cascade. Wins can chain several times from one spin.
- A win multiplier climbs with each cascade in most titles, and does not reset during free spins.
Why the variance is so high
Two things compound. First, the ways count swings by a factor of 360 between the smallest and largest configuration, so most spins are played on a far smaller grid than the headline number. Second, the real money sits in the free-spin round where the cascade multiplier does not reset — and that round needs four scatters, which is rare.
The practical consequence: you need a bankroll several times larger than you would for a low-volatility slot at the same RTP. A hundred spins at 0.20 is a reasonable test of a classic 5-reel; on Megaways it tells you almost nothing.
Most Megaways titles publish 96.0% to 96.5% RTP — the same as ordinary slots. The difference is entirely in how that return is distributed, not how much of it there is. See RTP and volatility.
Buy-feature, and whether it is worth it
Many Megaways games let you buy the free-spin round outright, typically for 100x your stake. The published RTP of the bought feature is usually a fraction of a per cent higher than the base game, which sounds like a bargain. It is not a cheat code: you are paying 100x for a round whose average return is slightly under 100x, and you are doing it in one transaction instead of spreading the risk over hundreds of spins. The variance of buying is brutal.
Studios licensing Megaways
Big Time Gaming owns the mechanic and licenses it. Pragmatic Play, Blueprint, Red Tiger and Relax Gaming all ship Megaways titles. The licensing means the core maths is consistent across studios — what changes is the art, the bonus structure and the multiplier ceiling.

Megaways questions
Are Megaways slots more generous?
No. RTP is in the same 96% band as ordinary slots. They are more volatile, not more generous.
What does 117,649 ways mean?
Six reels each showing seven symbols: 7 to the power of 6. It is the maximum configuration, and it does not appear on most spins.
Should I buy the bonus round?
Only if you understand that you are paying roughly its expected value and taking enormous variance in exchange for skipping the wait.
Which Megaways game should I start with?
Bonanza from Big Time Gaming is the original and the clearest demonstration of the mechanic.
